A river of tungsten

Here’s another shot from a summer trip to the top of the Hancock tower. It is very similar to the previous image that I posted, with two notable exceptions. One, it is taken in the absolute sweet spot of blue hour – especially during the midsummer, when the sun approaches the horizon at nearly a right angle, the light moves pretty fast. One minute can determine the difference between good and great light, and when it is *just* right, you’ll look at the back of the camera and drop your jaw. I eagerly anticipate the coming of winter and its unique photographic opportunities, not only for the snow and the ice, but also for an extended period of dramatic early and late lighting. The second exception is that it was taken as a single frame with a fisheye, and as any regular reader knows, I’m a bit obsessed with fisheye lenses.

Summer twilight and a river of tungsten. From this vantage point the frame says it all – to the left millions of people bustle about on their daily path, living and working and dying. On the right, nothing but calm cool waters.
