Going to the Sun Road

Glacier National Park will long be one of my very favorite parks. The place is not only beautiful and rugged and incomparable – but it also contains the Going to the Sun Road, which was designed and built to bring small vehicles through the most picturesque valleys I’ve ever seen. This allows anyone in a car or small truck to get a view of the park, and, I suspect, obviates the need for any more roads through the park, leaving the remainder unspoiled. I hopped out of the car, tripod and camera in hand, and began bounding down the face of this valley to take a few panoramas when the light was just right.

The ground is soft and verdant and cold all at once. The floor and walls of the valley were covered in beautiful purple flowers (a subject of a later post). Not that I took any risks in getting this photo, but it is so easy to walk down these slopes, and so damned hard to get back up without being reminded of how out of shape you are!
