A luminous goodbye

Ultimately, I want to visit all the National Parks in the United States – there are 58 official “National Parks” – any National Forests, Lakeshores, Monuments, etc that I can visit are just gravy. I was lucky enough this year to visit three new parks – Glacier, Theodore Roosevelt and Mesa Verde, as well as three Canadian National Parks. If you make it to Mesa Verde and you like camping, you can have the camp store set up a site with a large canvas tent, two cots and a latern for an additional $20 a night – which is really convenient if you don’t want to fly with a tent etc.

Knowing we wouldn’t be out in the wide open spaces of the world for many months to come, we stayed out as long as we could before the rangers closed off the park roads and made it back to the camp store just in time to take a shower and catch some sleep. This is the last photograph I took in Mesa Verde, and, even though it is of a gas station and a parking lot, it is one of my favorites for the quality of the light, the symmetry of the building and because of the bittersweet emotional response it evokes for me.

I am away from the computer until 12/3 – as I’m fortunate enough to be interviewing at Stanford – wish me luck!

A luminous goodbye
