Chicago’s very best cup.

I am a full-fledged and unrepentant coffee addict. By coffee, I mean COFFEE, not six creams and eight sugars, double whip, mocha frappucino coffee – rich, dark, bitter black coffee brewed carefully from masterfully roasted beans (don’t think I’m too snobby, I don’t begrudge anyone their preference – my wife uses flavored creamer). I unashamedly attempt to share (spread) my addiction with others (Mike). This turns out not to be so hard, because Mike lives in the same neighborhood as the best coffeeshop in Chicago. Now, before you get upset, I realize that there are better bistros, cafes, restaurants, and little out of the way spots where you might prefer to get caffeinated (having just been introduced to the Z&H cafe in Hyde Park – I may have another favorite to add to the list). However, it cannot be argued that you can get a better tasting cup of black coffee anywhere in the city. Imagine Starbucks when it was just a little place in Pike’s Place Seattle – the owner makes no compromises when it comes to quality. When we’re finished traipsing around the city early on a Sunday morning, we (or I if it happens I’m alone – yes I’m that hooked) always stop by for a cup.
Intelligentsia Snow Day
I drag my camera into the shop almost every time, but (with the exception of the photo above) I’m usually disappointed with the results. They recently acquired a series of Clover machines – these are $10,000+ machines which brew coffee a single cup at a time. The results are so outstanding that Starbucks has purchased Clover, the company that makes the machines and will not sell them to any other company. Somehow I doubt that their mediocre and overpriced beans will be able to utilize the advantages of these machines – so get to Intelligentsia (where the beans are simply better than any other roaster) and enjoy it while you can!

Here’s an also-ran.

April 14, 2009 - 6:06 am Darlene - Enjoyed your work here, very interesting & nothing beats a great cup of coffee...oh the magic of caffeine.

April 14, 2009 - 7:00 am Joe - I very much enjoy coffee... not nearly as much as Kern. But here in Boston when you ask for a REGULAR coffee you don't get regular coffee... you get Cream + 2 sugars. I was very surprised. Not nearly as surprised as the baristas when I handed it back asked for black coffee. "You want sugar?"... No... Black. I love the Intelligencia photograph. Very nice.

April 14, 2009 - 8:50 am Kristen - *goes to make dunkin donuts coffee in her 4 cup mr. coffee coffeemaker* :( i live w/in 5 minutes of not one...but FOUR starbucks. there isn't a decent coffeeshop w/in...i don't know how far :( *jealous*

April 14, 2009 - 9:22 am Robert - I too love coffee, and go that Intelligentsia location regularly. Great photographs too.

April 14, 2009 - 9:46 am Jeff - I have yet to take their coffee for a test drive. No shops around me and every time I am in the Loop, I forget. One of these days... That counter photo is great man.

April 14, 2009 - 12:48 pm Valerie - I love that I can be your human shield in maligning flavored coffee drinkers. The public should know that the real truth is I am not *allowed* to brew flavored coffee lest I taint our coffee maker. Great shot, though honey! "Hand in hand we can live togther, flavored or not, it is all the same. Black or flavored, sugared or plain, we shouldn't hate each other 'cuz it is lame..."

April 14, 2009 - 12:51 pm Justin - It's true, there is a moratorium on the brewing of flavored coffee beans in our house. Although the compromise is that you get flavored creamer and I am the one who wakes up first to brew it every morning - which has worked very well I might add.

April 14, 2009 - 1:34 pm Annie - I'm w/ Val on the flavored coffee issue. Yummmm french vanilla! And let me just say, I'm not a huge fan of coffee, but I love Dunkin' Donuts. GASP!

April 14, 2009 - 3:26 pm herocious - ceiling pipework looks much better in hdr than the pipe screensaver on my computer. seriously, hdr pipes are fun to look at and follow into corners, as are the outlets and the bags of coffee beans.

April 14, 2009 - 5:55 pm WriterX - Your pics are making me so homesick. And the urge for an espresso.

April 14, 2009 - 6:01 pm Justin - Thanks everyone for your comments - its so damned cool to hear from all of you!
